Mission and Vision
Eä – Journal of Medical Humanities & Social Studies of Science and Technology aims to be a channel for publications and academic discussions between scholars dedicated to medical humanities and social studies of science and technology worldwide. Our vision is not only to create a journal but to generate an every-day meeting point for those who are interested in those academic fields, gathering them together in the same place and time, in spite of geographical distances.
Defining academic fields
Medical Humanities
The Medical Humanities are academic fields of interdisciplinary nature that connect health and medicine with the humanities (philosophy, ethics, history, and religion), the arts (literature, theatre, visual arts, and music) and social sciences (sociology, anthropology, psychology, politics, economics, law, cultural studies). Humanities and arts provide a perspective about the human condition and an ethical thinking about the responsibility of men to their fellows. They allow us to develop observation, analysis and auto-reflection skills and enable an historical view about medicine and health in their theory and praxis. Social sciences offer an outlook on the connections between the concepts of health, biomedical sciences and technology and with the social environment where they develop.
Disciplines that are often included under this category are history of medicine, bioethics, medical epistemology and scientific research methodology, medical esthetics, medical pedagogy, medical sociology, medical anthropology, economy of health, medical law, health politics, and medical communication, among others.
In other words, Medical Humanities are the disciplines that result from the decision of the humanities of taking the phenomenon of medicine, health, sickness and medical care as a well defined object of study; and from the decision of the biomedical sciences of accepting to be analyzed under the perspective of the humanities, arts and social sciences.
Social Studies of Science and Technology
The Social Studies of Science and Technology are academic fields of interdisciplinary nature. Their object of study is the analysis of social, cultural, political and economical processes related to scientific and technological activities.
They conceive science and technology deeply bonded to the social environment where they grow and develop. This outlook does not dissociate science and technology from economics, history, society, culture, philosophy, anthropology, law, and politics.
Activities
Eä – Journal of Medical Humanities & Social Studies of Science and Technology publishes papers in the fields of medical humanities and social studies of science and technology. Eä has scheduled a periodicity of three issues a year. Since we aspire to academic excellence and reaching global impact, the journal meets the requirements of periodical publications indexes and it is entirely in Spanish and English. Articles submitted for publication are evaluated by prestigious referees, specialized in each field.
Moreover, considering the relevance of images (drawings, paintings, photographs, etc.) for the construction of knowledge, Eä has opened an iconoiathric section (from the Greek, ‘eikon’, image, picture, and ‘iathros’ medicine, physician, treatment). In this section authors will display an original composition of pictures with short explanatory texts. These iconoiathric compositions will be evaluated by referees -same as regular articles-, and will have to be submitted according to the instructions for submitting originals and respect authors’ copyright.
