São Paulo School of Advanced Science (SPSAS) in "Biotechnology, Biosocialities and Governance of Life Sciences"

SPSAS Biotechnology

From 11th to 15th August 2014 the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) hosted the São Paulo School of Advanced Science (SPSAS) on "Biotechnology, Biosocialities and Governance of Life Sciences". The event, from which Eä Journal participated, gathered over 100 participants (PhD students and postdocs) from

Brazil and over 20 countries, as well as over 20 highly recognized researchers from main research institutions to discuss about social, political, economic, legal and ethical issues regarding the developments on life and medical science of the last decades.

The proceedings of the SPSAS "Biotechnology, Biosocialities and Governance of Life Sciences" are now available, containing productions from different participants in some of the discussions that are emerging in the field and present and future (research, social, economic, political, ethical, regulatory) challenges to come.

Rapid developments in the life and medical sciences in the fields of genomics and biotechnology have raised important social, political, legal and ethical issues across global and in transnational contexts. In areas such as genetic medicine, stem cell research, data banking, reproductive technologies, epigenetics and synthetic biology there are new challenges regarding the appropriate implementation, likely impact and consequences for both science and society of these developments.

This five day advanced school brought together leading experts from across a broad field of the social and historical sciences (including Anthropology, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies, Political Science, History of Science) from world class research and educational institutes inside and outside Brazil to examine these issues. Combining a programme of talks and workshops with an emphasis on interactive dialogue with professors and students the school responded to the urgent need to provide training and education that can address some of the pressing social and ethical issues raised by developments in the life and medical sciences.

The event was financed by FAPESP, and organized by the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the Univerisity College of London (UCL).

Event chairs: Maria Conceição da Costa, Sahra Gibbon and Marko Monteiro. SPSAS proceedings organization: Raquel Velho.
