Nominations are being accepted for the 2010 Roberta G. Simmons Outstanding Dissertation in Medical Sociology Award. The award is given each year by the American Sociological Association's Medical Sociology section. Self-nominations are acceptable. Eligible candidates must have defended their doctoral dissertations within two academic years prior to the annual meeting at which the award is made. To be considered for the 2010 award, the candidate should submit an article-length paper (sole-authored), not to exceed 35 double-spaced pages (11- or 12-pitch font), inclusive of references. This paper may have been previously published, or may be in press or under review. A letter of recommendation from a faculty mentor familiar with the candidate's work is also required. Electronic submission of the paper (MS Word or PDF) is required. The letter of recommendation should be sent directly by the recommender as an email attachment (MS Word or PDF). The awardee will receive a $750 travel grant to attend ASA, attend the Reeder dinner as a guest of the Medical Sociology section, and an award certificate. Mullins Award Student Essay Competition - Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) Deadline for Submission: May 15, 2010 The Nicholas C. Mullins Award is awarded each year by the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) for an outstanding piece of scholarship by a graduate student in the field of Science and Technology Studies. The prize consists of a check for $US 1,000 and a plaque. The competition is for graduate student papers in the field of science and technology studies, including unpublished papers, published articles, and dissertation chapters. Dissertation chapters should be adapted so as to make them "stand-alone." The work may not be older than two years at the time of submission. A graduate student can only make one submission a year. The intended readership for the papers is a general STS audience. All papers must be submitted in English. The paper should not exceed 10,000 words, including title, notes, and references. Papers longer than the limit will be disqualified. The deadline for submission is May 15, 2010. Dibner Award for Excellence in Museum Exhibits Open call for submitting nominations for the Society for the History of Technology's Dibner Award for Excellence in Museum Exhibits. To qualify they must have opened to the public in the last 24 months an exhibit that interprets "the history of technology, industry, and engineering to the general public." The deadline is April 1. Magoun, Ph.D. The American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) and the March of Dimes are pleased to announce the annual Young Scholar Award in Perinatal Bioethics. Who is eligible? To be eligible for this award, applicants must be early in their career development, including those who are actively enrolled in graduate school, post-doctoral programs or no higher in their career achievement than the assistant professorship level. Applicants should submit proposals in the 'Perinatal Ethics' topic category in the ASBH Call for Proposals. Proposals that would fall into the perinatal ethics topic category include but are not limited to topics such as pre-conception health, reproductive decision making, pregnancy, pre-natal genetic testing, labor and delivery, newborn screening, neonatal decision making and other topics related to the perinatal time frame. Proposals may address clinical decision making, research or other bioethical or humanities-related topics. Deadline. Submit an abstract to the ASBH Call for Proposals on the ASBH Web site no later than March 3, 2010 at /meetings/annual/callguidelines.html.
