A recent University review has emphasised the various ways in which it should now develop. In essence, we are looking to realise the following broad objectives:- ● to guarantee our custodial and management responsibilities for a collection of the highest standing and international importance; ● to develop the collections responsibly, and sustainably; ● to extend out-reach activities (for example, through exhibitions and events, real and virtual; web presence and digitisation of the collections; partnership working); and ● to enhance our support for and facilitation of teaching and research with academic colleagues across all faculties, through use of the collections, and also through attracting loans and exhibitions. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery. 2. Develop strategies for The Hunterian which contribute to the University's Strategic Plan, and direct performance to secure effective and efficient delivery of these. 3. With senior university management colleagues, agree and implement a forward plan in response to the recommendations of the Hunterian Futures Group. 4. Provide direction for the care, use, development and management of the University’s collections in the Hunterian. 5. Liaise with, and provide advice to the Museums & Galleries Committee and senior management in the University, in all matters pertaining to the Hunterian and its collections, and their care and use. 6. Manage and supervise the application process to funding bodies, including the identification and initiation of fund-raising and income-generating opportunities, to secure additional income streams for the Hunterian. 7. Engage and motivate staff, providing an environment that realises their potential. 8. Direct staff to deliver key outcomes; planning, managing, monitoring and evaluating their efficient implementation and delivery. 9. Manage resources (physical, human, and financial), including the development and implementation of strategies to maximise their efficiency and effectiveness. 10. Liaise effectively with senior management to ensure the University provides the support necessary to enable the Hunterian to achieve agreed objectives. 11. Chair the Hunterian Management Group and line-manage the Hunterian's senior staff. 12. Convene and/or contribute to University committees and working groups relevant to the good operation of the Museum and Art Gallery. 13. Represent the Hunterian to, and build relationships with, professional, government and public agencies, and other external bodies, in the interests of the collections, and of the Hunterian's standing in the Scottish and UK cultural sectors. 14. Maintain and further develop professional competency.
