At the Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities (SVT) there is a temporary position as Centre Director that will take effect from January 2011. The term of appointment is for four years, with an opportunity for further extension. At the end of each fixed-term  period the position will be advertized publicly. No one can be employed for more than three fixed-term periods.

The centre director has the academic and administrative responsibility for the centre, conducts staff meetings, reports to the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, and is an integral part of the leadership group at the Faculty of Humanities.

The Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities (SVT) is an interdisciplinary interfaculty centre at the University of Bergen. The centre has the task to initiate and carry out research and is  responsible for the training of researchers in theory of science. Furthermore, the centre is responsible for the instruction in the
theory of science and ethics component of the Ph.D. research education (third cycle) at all the faculties at the University of Bergen. In addition, the centre gives courses in the theory of science and ethics to different academic milieus at all levels. The centre emphasizes theoretical and ethical topics that are relevant to the respective
academic disciplines. Thus both instruction and research at the centre are for the most part interdisciplinary. The centre has an extensive collaboration with other researchers and academic milieus at the University of Bergen, and also nationally and internationally. SVT is a member of the National Council for Science and Technology Studies. It can be mentioned that the centre has the coordinating role for two research projects funded by the EU’s 7 Framework Program, and
participates in and/or plays a contributory role in several other such projects.

The total staff of temporary and permanent employees at SVT constitutes approximately 18 full-time equivalent positions as of 2010. Of these, there are five permanent academic positions, distributed among the various faculties. The academic staff members (permanent staff, research fellows, post-doctors and researchers) have
different academic backgrounds, and the majority of them have an interdisciplinary background and/or dual expertise. The research milieu at SVT is interdisciplinary, with a broad understanding of theory of science in which both internal and external perspectives are included, and which include philosophy, history, sociology and ethics
of science and other disciplines that carry out research on science, social science and the humanities, including research on foundational issues within the various sciences, ELSA research and other research on science and society. The main part of the externally funded research is currently studying the ethical and societal aspects of modern science and technology. SVT has achieved notable research results and has ambitions at a high international level within selected areas of research.

The successful applicant as centre director must be a high profiled researcher with professor-level competence in theory of science/ science studies (see section above). We are looking for a centre director who can further develop the academic activities at SVT, has a good ability to communicate, motivate and exercise leadership, and who can quickly build up good relations with the staff at the centre and with other academic milieus. The work tasks for this position will include:

• Provide academic and strategic leadership for research conducted at the centre and for the collaboration with the various faculties at the University of Bergen, along with national and international academic milieus. This also includes strategic work relating to the discipline on national and international levels.
• Research, initiating new projects and the supervision of research in the theory of science.
• Overall academic responsibility for the theory of science and ethics portion of the training of researchers’ component at the University of Bergen.
• Overall responsibility for staff, resource use, as well as teaching and research related results at the centre.

• broad experience in teaching and supervision in theory of science that is relevant to the training component within the theory of science and ethics for researchers from various academic areas
• expertise in one central area of theory of science/science studies.

Only those applicants who have documented expertise in the type of  academic activity that the position requires will have their research competence evaluated.

Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies at the University of Alaska Anchorage seeks Two Postdoctoral Fellows  Anchorage, Alaska

The Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies (ICHS) at the University  of Alaska Anchorage seeks to improve the health of the residents of Alaska and the circumpolar north by understanding and addressing the factors that affect health and inform policy in our region. The ICHS is seeking two scholars who have completed their doctoral training to engage in an intensive two-year postdoctoral training program at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The program will consist of two years
of intensive scholar-directed research conducted in collaboration with  distinguished faculty mentors at the University of Alaska, and focused on health issues of particular relevance for Alaskan residents. The training curriculum will foster cross-disciplinary thinking and dialogue, as scholars and faculty from different disciplines at the University of Alaska assess and respond to the variety of contextual forces shaping population health in Alaska and the circumpolar north.

Candidates must have completed their doctoral training (including the award of their doctoral degree or letter of completion from their registrar's office) by the time of entry into the program (May or June 2010) in one of a variety of fields including, but not limited to: behavioral and social sciences, biological and natural sciences,
public policy, and public health. Past training in health-related areas is not a requirement, but applicants must clearly connect their postdoctoral research interests to substantive circumpolar health concerns. Applicants should welcome the challenge of conducting research in Alaska. Publication experience, professional meeting
presentations, and seminar or classroom teaching experience are preferred. ICHS is particularly interested in individuals whose research experience includes addiction to alcohol, tobacco, and other substances, diet and nutrition, and global climate change.

Applications to these positions will be accepted electronically. Details on the application process, including required documentation and submission procedures, can be accessed by clicking on the 'full description' link at: http://www.ichs.uaa.alaska.edu/whatsnew.htm
