Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theoretical Sciences

(Five-Year Non-Renewable)

Introduction

The College intends to elect three or four Post-Doctoral Research Fellows on Saturday, 19 February 2011 if there are candidates of sufficient merit. The Fellowships will be open to candidates in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theoretical Sciences (including Mathematics); the College intends to allocate one Fellowship specifically to the Theoretical Sciences if there is a candidate of sufficient merit. Successful candidates will be expected to take up their Fellowships on 1 October 2011 or such other date as may be agreed in advance with the College.

Eligibility

The College will accept applications from those who are, or have been, registered for a doctorate at any recognised University. The College expects that applicants will have completed their doctorate or be close to completion. In the latter case the College will need to be satisfied that Post-Doctoral Research Fellows will have completed their doctorates by the time they take up the Fellowship in October 2011. If you are in any doubt about your ability to meet this condition, please submit a case supporting your application with your online submission in the appropriate space provided. The College will not normally accept applications from applicants who were first registered for a higher degree prior to 1 August 2003. (The term 'higher degree' here means any degree, such as a master's or doctorate, above the level of a first or bachelor's degree.) If you believe there are special reasons why this is not appropriate in your case, please submit your reasons with your online submission in the appropriate space provided.

If you intend to spend part of the Fellowship preparing your thesis for publication you should say so in your application (see 'Applications', paragraph (iii), below), and should give an estimate of how much time that may take.

Remuneration, allowances and entitlements The Fellowship currently carries a stipend at entry of £26,071 per annum rising to £31,667 per annum on condition that a minimum quantity of teaching is undertaken for the University. If not, the stipend is

£23,725 per annum rising to £28,817 per annum. A Fellow living out of College but in or near Oxford also receives a housing allowance which is currently £5,913. These figures are reviewed annually.

A Post-Doctoral Research Fellow is entitled to a study in College and, if single, to free accommodation in College (in lieu of the housing allowance). Fellows are entitled to dinners and lunches in College without charge. There is an academic allowance which is currently

£3,091 to support research expenditure (including book purchases), and the College gives additional financial assistance to Fellows for the purchase of computers. The College is a member of the USS pension scheme and will also contribute towards the cost of private health insurance for Fellows. Fellows are also eligible to participate in a childcare salary sacrifice scheme for the purchase of childcare vouchers up to the value of £55 a week to pay for child day care at an approved nursery or registered child minder. Deductions for this purpose reduce taxable income and thus liability for income tax.

The primary duty of a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow is to pursue the programme of advanced study and research in Oxford approved by the College at the time of election and at a level of achievement acceptable to the College. Leave of absence to work away from Oxford may be granted on the recommendation of the College's Academic Purposes Committee, but only where the Committee is satisfied that such leave is necessary for the pursuit of the Fellow's programme of research.

Fellows are required to report regularly to the Academic Purposes Committee on their progress towards completion of their approved research programme within the term of the Fellowship. The College does not, however, regard Fellows as tied indissolubly to that particular programme and will be willing to entertain applications to vary it.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellows are full Fellows of the College and members of its governing body. As such, they are expected to attend and participate in all College meetings and may be required to serve on College committees and assist with the annual Prize Fellowship examinations.

Applications

You should apply by completing the online application form accessed via the College website on or before Friday, 24 September 2010. You must submit with your application:

a curriculum vitae;
a short thesis abstract;
a statement of proposed work: a clear and comprehensive statement (of not more than 1,000 words) of your proposed course of future research work during the five years of the Fellowship;
the names and addresses of two referees who have agreed to give a confidential assessment of your work and your research proposal. Your referees will need to follow the procedure notified to them by e-mail for submitting their assessments by 24 September 2010;
a sample of written work in English of up to 10,000 words to serve as evidence of your prowess as a scholar and researcher (this should be a published paper, an extract from the thesis, or equivalent).

Submitted documents must be in English. Please use the file up-load facility of the online application form to submit an electronic copy of the documents required. These must be in an Adobe PDF file format.

Do not electronically sign or encrypt the content. This will allow the College more easily to circulate your application for consideration.

If you are placed on the long short-list, you will then be asked to submit a copy of your entire thesis (or equivalent work).

There will be a viva voce examination of candidates selected from the long short-list in the presence of the Fellows of the College on Saturday, 12 February 2011.

Equal opportunities
The College is committed to equal opportunities; see its Equality Policy.
